Chelsea will need to pay £30million to sign Bayern Munich's Mats Hummels in January as they seek defensive reinforcements.
The Germany international, who was 70 caps for his country, is no longer first choice for his club and could be willing to move for regular game time.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has identified his defence as an area to improve in a bid to arrest his club's recent slump in form.
Chelsea could face losing defenders Gary Cahill and Andreas Christensen in January over a lack of playing time.
Sarri wants another player to challenge first-choice pair David Luiz and Anotnio Rudiger.
The club are also close to confirming a £45million deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic.
The USA international has lost his place in the first team to Jadon Sancho, and Chelsea have moved quickly to snap him up as an alternative to Pedro and Willian.
