Mane escapes FA punishment over altercation with Arsenal's Lichtsteiner

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has escaped any punishment from the FA over his altercation with Arsenal's Stephan Lichtsteiner  on Saturday.

During the first half of Liverpool's thumping 5-1 win at Anfield, Mane looked to have put his hands around the neck of the Swiss defender after he was caught in the face by a loose elbow.

However, according to The Sun, Mane will face no retrospective sanction because match official Michael Oliver saw the incident and awarded a free-kick to the Gunners as a result.

The news will mean Mane is available for Liverpool's titanic clash with title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.

Jurgen Klopp's side can move 10 points clear at the summit of the Premier League with a win over the reigning champions.

Mane scored Liverpool's third goal in what proved to be a routine win over Unai Emery's team, despite Ainsley Maitland-Niles having put Arsenal ahead after 11 minutes.

Roberto Firmino netted a hat-trick and Mohamed Salah also scored as Liverpool cemented their position at the top of the table.

Mane's clash with Lichtsteiner came during a fiesty opening 45 minutes at Anfield on Saturday night.

Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos found himself in a tense stand-off with Salah at half-time - until Virgil van Dijk stepped in.

The pair were seen walking off together at the break and the Gunners centre half appeared to be in discussion with the Reds forward.

Salah scored a penalty, which was given following a foul by Sokratis on the Egyptian, just before the half-time whistle to put Liverpool 4-1 up.

The Dutch defender was seen responding to Sokratis before Georginio Wijnaldum separated the pair as both sides headed into their dressing rooms.
