Willian urges Chelsea to tie down David Luiz to long-term deal

Chelsea winger Willian has urged the club to secure an extension on David Luiz's contract as the Brazilian centre half is now free to discuss a summer move with foreign clubs.

Luiz's current deal at Chelsea expires this summer and he is still to agree terms on a new contract. As such, he is free to sign an agreement for next season with overseas clubs from Tuesday.

Chelsea have a club policy that dictates players over the age of 30 should only be handed one-year extensions and Luiz, 31, knows he can secure a longer-term deal with greater security elsewhere.

Chelsea's policy is also hampering their attempts to tie down Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas, whose deals also run out this summer.

Luiz provided a superb assist for N'Golo Kante's winner at Crystal Palace on Sunday and Willian believes the defender must stay at the club.

'For sure, of course,' Willian said. 'I want. We have to see if they club will want him. I think they want. For me, I want him to stay. David has a lot of quality to do these kind of passes. This wasn't the first time he has done it. He tried a lot a couple of games ago. This time he had success and we scored a goal.'

Willian's own contract has only eighteen months to run. 'I'm fine,' Willian said. 'No rush about that. We can talk about that in the future, no problem.'
